Important Note:

This is a spoiler free review for the 3 part Netflix movie.  There is a 12 episode Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime available on Crunchy Roll and Amazon Prime Streaming dubbed. 

The 12 episode anime gives more back story for the characters and its events lead up to the Netflix movie.  You should definitely watch the 12 episode version first, assuming you don’t mind that it has more gore than the movie.  With that out of the way, here are the key points for the three episode Netflix movie.

The Bottom Line:

This 3 part anime movie is awesome.  The fight scenes are so good, words don’t do them justice.  You should watch it. 

Key Point Review:

Setting:

• Steam punk samurai vibes;

• traditional weapons;

• guns and other unique weapons types;

• a bad-ass armored train fortress;

• Japan and Japanese castles.

Story:

• Tons of action and amazing fight scenes;

• anime characters being badasses while killing zombie hordes;

• gun-wielding female main character kicks serious ass constantly;

• mysterious energy gives zombies life and gives some weapons power;

• cool weapons;

• romance;

• interesting drama;

• mysterious enemies with grand plans;

• mistrust within allied ranks;

• many subtle nuances used for good story layering. 

Characters:

• Character designs are average and many are not particularly unique; 

• clothing designs and uniforms fit the setting;

• character personalities are interesting, but don’t have a lot of time in 3 episodes to develop depth. 

Dialogue and voice acting:

• Voice acting is good overall;

• dialogue is average.

Animation:

• Artistic, interesting, and beautiful;

• blood, but not gore;

• character eyes have some awkward movements at times;

Music, openings, and endings:

• Music in the series is very good and gives depth to the story;

• the opening theme is ok;

• the opening animation is good;

• the first ending theme is ok;

• the second ending theme is good;

• the first ending animation is mediocre, but the second one is a much better and has a fun dance scene.
