Nintendo Continues to Disappoint Fans With June 2021 Nintendo Direct at E3

I’m not going to touch on everything, but the Nintendo Direct today at E3 was really disappointing. Here’s a bullet list of some of the things they announced:

Kazuya from Tekken joins the Smash Ultimate Roster. I’m sure there will be some Tekken fans that will like this one and it does make sense for Nintendo to collect fighters from another fighting game franchise, but I don’t think most Nintendo fans will be happy about this choice.

Life is Strange: True Colors (Remaster Collection) announced. Release Date 9/10/21. This is fine, just nothing ground breaking.

Mario Party Superstars will be released 10/29/21. This is mostly just Nintendo being extremely lazy and recycling old games so they don’t need to make a new one. Really sad, but predictable. At least the online play should be fun if you enjoy Mario Party.

I feel so bad for Metroid fans. Nintendo trolled them so hard today. There was 3D footage of a Metroid game dangled, but it turned out to be a 2D side scrolling game that looks really bad. It’s called Metroid Dread, obviously getting its name from my feelings every time Nintendo has a Direct.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is getting a Switch release. It’s an action RPG with quests, abilities, and exploration. It seems pretty cool. It’s been out for over a year on PS4 already. Nothing spectacular here since it’s not new.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin to be released on 8/9/21. It’s a sequel to a 3DS game with a more anime style look to it. The new one looks good, if you don’t mind the Monster Hunter franchise being adapted for younger audiences and using a turn-based battle system.

Probably the best thing they announced today is Shin Megami Tensei V. It will be available on 11/12/21. The game allows you to explore a 3D environment in post-apocalyptic Japan and has a turn based battle system. The game looks good and is a Nintendo Switch Exclusive. The game definitely has old school vibes in terms of secrets to unlock and complexity.

A Mario and Rabbids cross over game called Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. No release date announced, but sometime in 2022 they claim. I don’t find this exciting at all, but it will probably sell well with children. Poor Rayman… left behind by his own sub characters.

A few Zelda related things:

  • A Hyrule Warriors DLC explansion

  • A Skyward Sword Remake

  • A Game and Watch system that plays the very first Zelda game (NES), Zelda II (NES), and Link’s Awakening (Game Boy version)

  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 has a new trailer, but no release date. Only that it will be sometime in 2022 (if Nintendo doesn’t push it back like they love to do). This was actually a huge disappointment. I thought they would have a hard release date for it near the December holidays this year, but nope. I’m sure the game will be good when it eventually released, but how long players will have to wait for that to happen is the problem. Nintendo really needed a big game to announce at E3, but instead they’re just asking players to be patient while they do little with their resources.

Also, there was no mention of Animal Crossing, despite its success. It’s really worrisome how Nintendo handles their IPs and expects the fan base to stay loyal. Below is a link to the full direct if you want to watch it, but it’s pretty sad.
