The Quality of Nintendo's New Animal Crossing Merch is Questionable

Nintendo has released new ACNH themed Nintendo Store reward items available to be redeemed with platinum coins. Platinum coins are earned by doing “missions” you can find on your My Nintendo account. Most of the platinum missions are geared toward coercing you to play specific games, visit outdated Nintendo eshops on older systems, or linking social media accounts. These “regular” platinum points you need (there are platinum points that are specific to certain games) can cost money or time to build up. Which is why seeing so many points needed to earn low quality merch from Nintendo is sad. Below are the 5 new items and I’ll discuss the fabric items, the placemats, and the key chain.

The fabric items

The picture of the Dodo Airlines bag is a dead giveaway that these 3 items are made from very cheap polyester that wrinkles with even slight use. In terms of design, the Nook bag is probably the best looking. The bandana is nice if you’re looking for a stealth video game design to wear around, but with how cheap the material looks, I can’t recommend trying to use it as a face mask during these covid-19 times. It’s probably best to just go with one of the bags if you’re looking for utility. If you’re saving up points, I think you’ll be happier with picking the Nook bag over the Dodo Airlines bag.

The placemats

When I saw these placemats were only 30 points and had some interesting designs, I was pretty excited. It seemed like Nintendo was finally rewarding/appreciating players well, but then I read the fine-print:

Amalgia LLC Nintendo Placemat Fine Print

The fine-print reveals these aren’t actually placemats! They are just designs you have to use your own printer and ink for. I was so disappointed in Nintendo on this one.

The keychain

This Key chain was the most expensive item (1000 regular platinum coins). If you are saving up and can only pick one thing, this is the item to pick. Even so, the print job on his head in the picture makes Nook look like he’s missing his nose. Other than that and Nook’s depressed face, this seems like a good item to take if you have the points and don’t want a cheap bag. I hope Nintendo eventually decides to reward players with quality, but for now you can probably find better made items on Etsy.
